Tampa - At some point in time, all homes will need a new roof.  For homeowners, the task can be intimidating, but putting it off for too long could lead to costlier problems – especially if a storm comes and exposes your roof’s weaknesses.

To help guide consumers through the process, the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) has outlined key steps in a new brochure.

Roofing the Right Way helps consumers identify when it’s time for a new roof, choose a qualified licensed contractor, and make wise decisions about which materials to use.

The brochure identifies common roofing materials – including asphalt shingles, metal roofing, slate, tile and wood – and lists some of each product’s features – such as what works best in dry climates, hail regions, or cold weather.

There’s also a section on care and maintenance to help get the longest possible life for your roof.

“Your roof is the largest component of your house – which also means it can be the most vulnerable to severe storms – and the costliest single site of damage,” said IBHS Project Engineer Jason Smart.  “So we created ‘Roofing the Right Way’ to guide consumers and possibly limit financial disasters by building a stronger roof.”
