Tampa - IBHS President and CEO Harvey Ryland spoke Friday in San Francisco at the “Forum on Catastrophe Preparedness: Partnering to Protect Workplaces.”

Timed to coincide with the centennial anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the Forum was planned to provide employers, employees, insurers, safety professionals and the public up-to-date relevant information on disaster and catastrophe preparedness.

Mr. Ryland emphasized the need for businesses to identify risk, develop continuity plans and protect their property and assets by providing the following statistics:

  • One of every five businesses experiences a major disruption each year.
  • Small business owners have a higher probability of being impacted by a disaster.
  • Small business owners have fewer recovery resources and a lower tolerance for losses.
  • As many as 90% of small businesses do not have a business continuity plan in place.
  • More than 60% of small businesses do not have a backup power supply.

Mr. Ryland also explained the need for incentives to encourage actions by business owners, from the government at the national, state and local levels as well as from banking and retail establishments – all of whom benefit from a sustained community and customer base.

The Institute for Business & Home Safety works to reduce the social and economic effects of natural disasters and other property losses by conducting research and advocating improved construction, maintenance and preparation practices.
